I like using old browsers to test things on. My reasoning goes that if it works in both an old browser and a new browser, it is fairly likely to work in the ones in-between.
Also, by developing on the old browser, you fix the trickiest problems first.
Now, Internet Explorer 8 is the oldest version of Internet Explorer you can still get test VMs for:
Unfortunately it doesn't work with most sites online:
This turns out to be because more modern version of TLS are not enabled.
You can enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 from the Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab:
Now sites will work again:
CAUTION: Of course IE8 isn't supported and likely has lots and lots of security problems, so you might not want to allow people to use it to access your infrastructure anyway.
