Google today launched a new product called `Google Gears <http://gears.google.com>`_  which is an open source plugin available for Firefox, IE and others which enables pages to store data offline via a simple API. It uses an SQLite database for the storage and has a sync API. 

It provides a half-way house between full desktop applications like `Joyent <http://joyent.com>`_ `Slingshot <http://joyeur.com/2007/03/22/joyent-slingshot>`_ and `XULRunner <http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/XULRunner>`_ and traditional web applications.
